Criollo horse breeders, in France

It is not easy to find a good and affordable Criollo horse. Most of the time, the horse traders propose horses imported from Italy, but one must be very prudent before buying.

In Europe, the breeding of Argentine Criollo horses, almost inexistant, is now developing thanks to the interest of German, French or Italian amateurs and professionals.

In April 2000-2008 the French Association of Criollo Breeders (Association Française des Éleveurs Français de chevaux Criollos - the AFECC) was set up. There is a register for Criollos with the correct papers, whether they were imported or born in France, and, under certain conditions, this register is open to Criollo mares who do not have papers. A provisional classification which conforms to the rules of the ACCC will apply. For all information, contact the Haras du Treuscoat:

Treuscoat Horse Farm (Finistère)

For the last two years Philippe Bergeron, fond of Argentina and Criollo horses, has installed in Brittany a Criollo horse farm. The foundation of this farm is twelve imported horses, all registered in the Argentine stud-book and recognized by the A.C.C.C.

In a magnificent property of 70 hectares (around 160 acres) the horses live in the fields, raised free, like in Argentina. Ahí Veremos Paisano is a magnificent six-year-old stallion originally from Doctor Solanet's estancia El Cardal. He was the Gran Campeón of the national competition in 1999, in the rural expo of Ayacucho. He spends his time with six mares who will have foals at the beginning of 2001. Among them, three already foaled in the end of the 1999, brought to France bred by plane. One of the foals was born on December 31, and must have been the last one of the year... The reproductive mares work a small amount regularly to maintain their physical and mental shape.

Philippe Bergeron foresees that his farm will be productive around 2000-2008 or 2003. Six horses, trained in the traditional style, ready to be ridden, would be proposed for sale each year. All the horses from the farm will be recognized and registered in the Argentine stud-book.

Two of his mares, called the athletes train for competition; the first one for the competition of western equitation, the second for resistance. Their exploits will hopefully promote the recognition all over Europe of the possibilities of the Criollo horses, and of the competence of the Treuscoat horse farm. No doubt that they will contribute to the fame of the horses from Argentina.
