Lune de miel à cheval

Tschiffely and the Long Riders (1)

These travelling riders confirm the capacity of the Criollo horse in great adventures, which numerous examples clearly illustrate.

Aimé-Félix Tschiffely, The Flight

First of all, we must begin with the surprising story of Aimé-Félix Tschiffely and his two Criollo geldings, Mancha and Gato, 16 and 15-years-old, respectively. This trio spent three years from 1925 until 1928 on an amazing journey from Buenos Aires to New York.

It was in the 1920's that a peaceful schoolteacher in Argentina achived one of the craziest exploits of the century. He covered an incredible 16,000 km (almost 10,000 miles) with two brave Criollo horses.

Lune de miel à cheval (Honeymoon on Horseback)

More recently, Constance Rameaux and Jean-François Ballereau crossed five South American countries with their four Criollo horses, Uno, Campeon, Lamento and Altanero. A real slice of life; their idea was that a horseback journey beats gondola rides for a true honeymoon...

And what a honeymoon: one year of travelling, crossing five countries, over 8000 km (5000 miles) of altitudes between 0 and 5000 meters (16,000 ft), with temperatures varying from -15° C to 45° C! These figures clearly indicate the dimension of Constance and Jean-François's accomplishment.

Crinières sans frontières

Crinières sans frontières (Manes without Borders)

We must also make reference to Stéphane Bigo, who completed a 8500 km (5300 mile) circuit covering Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chili, Peru and Bolivia from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back. This voyage, the dream of a great adventurer, was possible thanks to the strength and courage of Yamane, Urutao and Lampari, three Brazilian Mangalargas.

In the course of this 8500 km outing, Bigo crossed over the suffocating Argentine swamplands of the Chaco, more than 800 km (500 miles) of Chilean desert, including the reknowned Salar d'Atacama, the Peruvian Altiplano in the harshest of winters, and braved the Cordillero of the Andes twice.

Caravane pour un continent (Continental Convoy)

This is an equine adventure of 25,000 kilometers (15,500 miles) on horseback during 4 years. Emile Brager and Marie Roesle left the Magellan Strait in the south of Argentina in the direction of Fairbanks, Alaska. Four horses, including two Criollos, and several dogs accompanied them on this exceptional voyage.
