La Yerra, working with livestock

Report in pictures by Emmanuel Ortiz
Extract from the exposition, « Man and horse »

« La Yerra » consists of the branding of livestock and the castration of calves.  There are two types of brand, on the ear by a notch in one or other ear which also identifies the sex of the calf, an iron brand on the left rear thigh, even though it is usually recommended today to mark the jaw so as not to mark the leather.

Beforehand « La Yerra » was a feast, beasts were slaughtered and roasted on a huge grill (l’asado), the owner of the livestock provides meat and wine for his friends and family.  It is a get-together for the farming community.  « La Yerra » usually takes place in autumn because when the temperature is lower, there are fewer flies.  Today, the animals are herded into corrals where they are vaccinated, branded and where the calves are castrated in the « manga ». The festive felling is not often the order of the day.  Often, also, the men clean the cow dung off the tails in view of the early departure the next day to sell them at auction.

The Criollo horse which can, at this event, show his indispensable dexterity in working with livestock, is the pride of his owner who shows him off to his friends.

  • It is no longer dawn, the vaccine and the material is ready for « la Yerra ».  The animals must be gathered together to vaccinate, brand and castrate the calves.
  • The Criollo horse is ready to go to work.
  • Setting off for a rough day….
  • Sometimes it is necessary to twist the calves’ tails to make them move forward.
  • Sometimes a calf which has managed to escape has got separated from the herd, but it’s only a worthy reprieve.
  • The Criollo horse knows his work very well, like pushing the livestock with his chest into the « manga ».
  • The vaccine is administered to the livestock in the « manga ».
  • In the following passage, the same animals are branded with a hot iron, after which they are ready to go off to be sold at auction.

  • Portrait of « Pepo ».
  • While the men work, the horses wait.
  • M ême dans un petit enclos, les veaux ne peuvent être capturés qu'au lasso. Cet instant donne lieu à des situations cocasses et des chutes mémorables.
  • While their calves are being castrated, the cows moo in the background.
  • In Argentina, it is not good form to say that one « learns » to ride.  One learns to « fall ».  Initiation into the « doma » for this young man on a calf.  The fall is inevitable.
  • Opening and reclosing the « tranqueras » is part of the Criollo horses’ routine.  The herds are frequently moved about.
  • At the end of the day, the livestock is brought back into the pasture ;  no bull will leave the herd except in the direction of the slaughterhouse.
  • The trees seemed to be imitating the people by waving their branches.
